The latest story is that some paralympians were robbed while in Rio training. Now, I realize that every city has their problems, it just seems like Rio is a truly awful place. I know we have one or two Oppos who live in this area of Brazil, and I’d love to see their take on the Olympics. I know Rio can’t be all bad, I’ve just heard absolutely nothing good so far. So please, someone tell me what the silver lining is of the upcoming Rio Olympics.

My entire life I’ve loved the Olympics more than anyone I know, with the exception of my Dad who passed on that appreciation.

So I don’t say it lightly when I say these games are a travesty and should not happen based on everything I have read. I don’t trust that government to prevent some immense tragedy from happening.

That’s my biggest issue. I know you can’t ask these athletes to not go, as they’ve trained their whole lives for it. But I fully expect something to go catastrophically wrong. Each Olympic city seems to be getting worse. I figure it's only a few years away before we hold them on a toxic waste site. That seems the logical next step.

Wasn’t London okay? Or am I missing something?

I know Sochi was shit and probably a sham for Ukrainian shenanigans, but the last couple like Turin and Sydney went okay.

No, London wasn't bad, but Sochi and Beijing weren't exactly the best. Although I can't believe Beijing was 8 years ago already.

I was in athens for the olympics, the problem is finding decent host cities, a lot of places just don’t want it. the amount of money they have to spend is’nt woth it to them, thats why you’re seeing 3rd world countries hosting these type of games, be it soccer, or the olympics.

Or, the “winning” host cities kick more money back to the IOC. But you still have a valid point regardless. I kind of always thought they should have a backup plan. They know host cities far enough out, why not give the city an ultimatum? Have “X” amount of construction/cleanup completed by such a date, or it defaults to someone else. And make that someone else a city/country that has hosted before, that knows what the IOC expects and has proven they can get it done.

honestly, any one of the last 3 host cities can be up and running in no time... rio needed to take the money they spent on bribes to get the get the games and should have invested it in the city to begin with, they would have been better off.

Makes sense to me. Lets face it, what the heck is Sochi doing with all the stuff they built for the Olympiad? I'm sure they could clean the cobwebs out and turn the lights back on.
